Neir’s Tavern

Neir's Tavern

Neir’s Tavern 87-48 78th St. Woodhaven NY 11421  718.296.0600

Neir’s is a truly historic bar. It’s the oldest bar in Queens and it would be the oldest bar in NYC if Queens was part on NYC back then.

See the Neir’s website for more of their history.

Getting there is easy enough. Mass transit is close. Take the J train to 75th St. or Q56 bus to 78th St. Parking can be hard to find.

Don’t forget to read the blue sign historic marker before going in.

Stepping into Neir’s is like stepping back in time. The bar and most of the equipment are very old.

It’s one of the few bars, if not the only one left in NYC, that uses an ice covered coil system to pump it’s draft beers. This ensures an always cold pint.

The atmosphere is immediately welcoming. If you can’t find a seat then go to the backroom of the bar. It’s comfortable and relaxing. The staff is friendly and the food is good.

The beers are pretty much standard issue although there is usually some kind of microbrew available. On my last visit they had Sam Adams Cold Snap on tap.

Feel free to walk around the bar. The walls are adorned with various photos and press clippings from its storied history.

They have a jukebox that has quite a great selection of music. It’s not too loud either.

Did you know that Mae West sang there? For those who don’t know who she was then you might remember a movie called Goodfellas. Parts of that movie, and others, were filmed there.

Neir’s was a bigger place at one time. The upstairs room and the one lane bowling alley in the back are no longer there.

Still it’s a great place and a must see especially for those who enjoy historic places.

I went last Sunday for the first time. Try the Stella on tap at the bar. Also the Three way Fries and Pulled Pork are the best.

I went with my pal and had great conversations with the customers , barntenders and owner Loy.

I am taking my sister who now lives outside of NY to check it out,
